Applied Mixed Methods Analysis with MAXQDA


The workshop focuses on mixed methods analysis, which involves the integration of both qualitative and quantitative data or results. The instructor will provide practical examples and demonstration, using data from his research projects collected to illustrate how MAXQDA can assist with mixed methods analysis from setting up your project file with both qualitative and quantitative data to conducting integrated analysis. We will address these functions:

  • How to create and use document variables
  • How to use the new “Stats” module for basic statistics, frequency tables or diagrams
  • How to compare groups of data with a crosstab or segment matrix
  • How to use the quote matrix and interactive quote matrix to facilitate an integrated mixed methods analysis
  • How to create joint displays to represent the integration of qualitative and quantitative results?

This workshop consists of a mixture of demonstrations and guided practice. We will have hands on activities to focus on the practical knowledge required for using MAXQDA for mixed methods analysis.


  • Introduction to document variables as a crucial tool for mixed methods analyses with MAXQDA
    • Adding and importing document variables
    • Activation by document variables
  • Using the Stats module
  • Using crosstabs and segment matrices, especially to compare sub-groups
  • Using the quote matrix and interactive quote matrix to compare quantitatively different groups
  • Using joint displays to integrate qualitative and quantitative data


After completing this workshop, participants will understand how MAXQDA can facilitate mixed methods analysis for common mixed methods designs. Specifically, participants will have a deeper understanding of using document variables for analysis of data in MAXQDA with the “Stats” module. Participants will be able to compare groups of data examining codes, code frequencies, and text segments with crosstabs and the quote matrices. They will also know how to use features such as the interactive quote matrix and joint displays for mixed methods analysis.

For anyone who is interested to learn which features MAXQDA offers for mixed methods research and how to use them.


Knowledge of the MAXQDA basic features, including the ability to use the interface, add documents to the project, create and apply codes, and retrieve coded segments. An basic understanding of statistics and mixed methods will be helpful.


All participants need a Windows or Mac laptop with the most current version of MAXQDA Analytics Pro (incl. the Stats module).

Timothy C. Guetterman PhD, is an applied research methodologist and associate professor at Creighton University in Omaha, NE, USA. His scholarship focuses on advancing the methodology of mixed methods research, particularly on integration and the intersection of mixed methods with qualitative designs. His applied research spans health sciences, education, assessment, and other fields. He is an associate editor for the Journal of Mixed Methods Research.
